We talk a lot about how crucial hydration is for hockey players, so here’s a quick, simple solution to make sure you’re always getting the electrolytes you need: Gary’s homemade electrolyte drink.

For the record there are some great commercial products that you can pick up just make sure they're actually an electrolyte drink and not a soda pop in a costume.

Here’s the recipe for Gary’s Homemade Electrolyte Drink: Yellow Watermelon Version

  • 1 cup chopped watermelon 🍉
  • 1 tsp raw honey (you might want to add up to 2 tbsp if you are using as an energy source) 🍯
  • 1/4 tsp sea salt🧂 (if you sweat a lot or if you lost weight during your training session add more salt)
  • 1/2 to 1 cup coconut water 🥥
  • 1 cup water 💧

Directions:

  1. Mix all the ingredients together in a large water bottle or jug.
  2. Sip on it throughout your game, practice, or workout to keep your energy levels high and your body hydrated.

This drink will give you a solid balance of sodium, potassium, and a little sugar, without any of the processed ingredients you find in most store-bought options.

Why it Works:

  • Replaces Electrolytes: The salt helps you replenish the sodium lost in sweat, and the lemon/lime juice adds potassium to keep your muscles firing properly.
  • Sustains Energy: The honey or maple syrup gives you a quick, natural carb boost, without spiking your blood sugar like typical sports drinks.
  • No Junk: It’s clean, simple, and effective—just the way we like it.

Give it a try before your next practice or game, and see how you feel.

Hydration is key to performance, and this homemade drink is an easy way to stay ahead of the curve. It's why include a component of nutrition in all of our athlete programs.

Stay sharp, stay hydrated.
